Step 1: Attend an information session

Step 2: Review the requirements

  • To join in as a NCM, you must:

    • be a Canadian citizen

    • be Between the ages of 16 to 57 years of age, members may apply under 18 years of age with parental or legal guardian approval

    • have completed Grade 10 or 24 credits of Secondary 4 in Quebec

  • To join in as an officer, you must:

    • be a Canadian citizen

    • be between the ages of 16 to 57 years of age, members may apply under 18 years of age with parental or legal guardian approval

    • have completed Grade 12 or Secondary 5 in Quebec

    • have, or are working towards, earning a Bachelor’s Degree

    • If you do not have a degree you may be eligible for one of the CAF Paid Education programs

    • to be a fully trained member of the Canadian Armed Forces, you must complete your enrolment, complete the CAF Basic Military training; either 12 weekends or 5 weeks full time, and succeed your phase 1 career course; 7 weeks for Infantry, 1 to 4 months for other trades or officers.

    • all current serving members and potential recruits must meet the Operational Fitness standards of the CAF, which is calculated through the FORCE Evaluation test. The FORCE test consists of 4 components;

      • sandbag lift

      • intermittent loaded shuttles

      • sandbag drag

      • 20-metre rushes

    It is highly recommended that you begin training your physical fitness before attempting a FORCE test or starting your Basic Military Qualification course (BMQ) and subsequent trade specific courses.

Step 3: Apply Online

Once you have all the information you need and if you meet the Canadian Armed Forces recruiting standard, you may apply online at forces.gc.ca.

Be sure to list The Black Watch as your unit of choice.

Our Commitment

During your first year of enrolment, either as an NCO or as a Junior Commissioned officer, you will be issued your personal military kit. You will also be taught drill lessons, basic weapon skills, first aid, and other relevant basic military skill.

After the completion of your BMQ, you will be pushed forward to more trade specific training, for the Infantry this mean more intense weapons and military skills training.

Military training is most often conducted at the Bleury Armoury of the Black Watch, however you may be sent to another Regimental Unit to complete your BMQ. Your Phase 1 Courses, known as DP1, will be taking place in either CFB Farnham or CFB Valcartier.

  • During our training year, Early September to late May of the following year, Unit training will take place most Tuesday nights from 19:00 until 22:00. Weekend field training or qualifications mandated program may happen at least once a month during the year. Members are encouraged to continue their physical fitness training outside of the regiment, and keep up to date on military knowledge through online tools provided by the CAFs.

    There are also many key dates during the year important for members to attend such as, The Regiment Christmas Dinner, The Regimental Birthday, The Junior Ranks (Fisher Dinner) or Officers’ Mess dinners.
